Reach for the Top (2006/2007)

May 28, 2007 - Reach for the Top Team Finishes Second at National Championships
On Sunday in Edmonton, Kennebecasis Valley High's Reach for the Top team won their semi-final against St-George's of Vancouver. KV had lost to St.-George's in the round robin which made this win even more meaningful. The Crusaders battled hard but lost a very exciting final to London Central High School of Ontario by a score of 365-300. London was undefeated this season in provincial (Ontario) and national play and were the heavy favourites. This was KV's best performance ever in Reach for the Top. They had previously lost in the quarter-finals in 2004 and 2006. They finished #2 in Canada out of over 500 teams from across the country. Captain Morgan Gagnon was named to the 4 player all-star team for his contribution to the team's success. Gagnon will graduate this June, but the remaining players will be returning next season as KV will attempt to return to the Nationals for the 4th straight time.
The taped matches will be televised on various educational networks such as TV Ontario and Canadian Learning Television throughout the summer and fall.
The team includes Morgan Gagnon, Will Koncovy, Kale O’Neill, Nick Manuel, alternates Dylan Lenton and Stephen Spence, as well as teacher/coach Mr. Jason Thorne.

May 27, 2007 - KVHS Reach for the Top Team Reaches National Semi-Final for the First Time Ever
KVHS continued their success at the National Reach for the Top Championship by posting a win over Sir Winston Churchill Secondary of Vancouver in their Sunday after-noon quarter-final match. The Crusaders dominated early, leading 175 points to 30 at the end of the first round of questions. KV kept their lead at over 100 points for the rest of the match, winning by a final score of 355-245.
The New Brunswick Champs now move on to National Reach for the Top semi-final for the first time in the school's history. KV were National Champions on CBC's Smart Ask! in 2002 but have been eliminated in the quarter-finals of their previous participations at Reach Nationals in 2004 and 2006. Their opponents will be George's of Vancouver.

May 26, 2007 - KVHS Reach for the Top Team Ranked Third after Round Robin at National Championships
The Kennebecasis Valley High School Reach for the Top team is in Edmonton, Alberta this week for the National Championships. In the round robin portion of the competition, KV finished with a record of 8 wins and 3 losses. This ranked them in 3rd position out of 12 teams and gave them a bye into the quarter-finals of the televised playoffs. KV started off the day with five straight wins, but needed a victory in their last game versus Gloucester of Ontario to secure a bye into the quarters. A loss in that match would have left KV in 5th place.

Reach for Dal, October 2006
On Friday, three members of the KVHS Reach for the Top team, Kale O’Neill, Morgan Gagon and Will Koncovy participated in the Reach for Dal event at Dalhousie University in Halifax. The team qualified 2nd out of 40 teams from across the Maritimes in the morning qualification round. In the quarter-finals they beat Easy Hants of Nova Scotia before falling to Dartmouth High School in the semis.
With their third place finish, the team won three thousand dollars worth of scholarships to Dalhousie University. Morgan Gagnon has four thousand dollars in scholarships in the last 2 years’ events.
Congratulations to the team on a great performance.

Sir James Dunn, November 2006
KVHS sent four teams to a reach event for the first time ever on Saturday in Saint-Andrew’s. The “B” team posted a six and one record losing only the final to Minto High by twenty points. The “C” and “D” teams each played well but were left out of the playoffs.
KV’s senior team included new players Will Koncovy, Kale O’Neill and Thomas McShane, as well as returning player Morgan Gagnon. Our Crusaders went undefeated winning all seven of their games including a 300-290 come-from-behind win versus Oromocto High in the Final. This was our Crusaders’ 52nd consecutive win in provincial play as well as their 12th championship in a row dating back to April of 2004.
The team will play in four other events this season leading-up to the provincials in April in the hopes of earning their 3rd consecutive trip to the National Championships.
Congratulations to all players on a great event!

Saint Malachy’s Event, December 2006
On Saturday, KVHS participated in the second Reach for the Top event of the season and for the first time ever; KV sent 5 teams to a provincial event.
In the Intermediate division, all three teams played well but fell short of the top 2 finish needed to qualify for the playoffs. The “B” and “C” teams finished just short with 3 wins and 2 losses.
In the Senior Division, KV’s “A” team, including Morgan Gagnon, Will Koncovy, Kale O’Neill and Stephen Spence went undefeated once again and has won 55 consecutive games over the past 2 seasons in Provincial play. Our Crusaders beat FHS in the final 490-180 to win their 13th straight tournament. Our “A” team’s only competition of the day came from their own teammates on the “B” team whom they beat in the semi-final.
The “B”team, which included Thomas McShane, Nick Manuel, Corey Goodwin, Owen Gillbride and Dylan Lenton won 4 games in the round robin and had only one loss which came by only 10 points. That loss was all that prevented a KV versus KV final. This was the first time ever that a school had two of its teams finish in the top 3 in the senior division at a provincial Reach for the Top event.
The season resumes in February with the third provincial event of the season which will be hosted by KVHS.
Congratulations to all teams on a great event!
